A Two-Water Day: Kern River Streamers and Lake Isabella Stillwater

3 min read

One of the biggest advantages of fishing out of Kernville is that you don't have to choose just one type of water. If the river is running high, or if you simply want to change up your tactics halfway through the day, you have options. In his latest video, Guy Jeans demonstrates exactly what a two-water day looks like, splitting his time between wading the Kern River and fishing stillwater structure from a float tube on Lake Isabella.

The video is a great reminder that adaptability is the most important tool in your fly box. By shifting locations and adjusting his retrieve, Guy turns challenging conditions into a highly productive day on the water.

High Water Tactics on the Kern River

The day starts on the Kern River, where the flows are pushing around 1,000 CFS. For many anglers, that number can be intimidating. Fast, heavy water often forces you to rethink your approach, because the middle of the river is simply too fast for trout to hold comfortably.

But high water doesn't mean the fishing shuts down—it just means the fish move. When the main current is roaring, trout push toward the banks to find softer water and relief. This creates a perfect scenario for one of the most exciting ways to fish the Kern: stripping streamers along the edges.

Guy focuses his efforts on these softer margins, using a down-and-across presentation. This technique allows the flies to swing through the current and into the slower water near the bank, right where the fish are holding. His setup for this approach is a two-streamer rig featuring two Woolly Buggers. Fishing two streamers at once gives the fish multiple targets and creates the illusion of a larger baitfish chasing a smaller one, which can trigger aggressive, predatory strikes.

In the video, Guy is using a 3-weight rod, which makes fighting these strong, river-bred rainbows incredibly fun. He notes that the fish are feeding heavily, pointing out their fat bellies, which means they are willing to chase down a meal if it is presented correctly.

Shifting Gears: Float Tube Fishing on Lake Isabella

Halfway through the video, the scene shifts entirely. Guy trades the fast-moving currents of the Kern River for the quiet, flooded timber of Lake Isabella. Fishing from a small inflatable float tube, he targets the stillwater structure where fish love to ambush prey.

Lake Isabella offers a completely different fly fishing experience. Instead of reading seams and current breaks, you are looking for submerged brush, drop-offs, and flooded trees. It is a visual, deliberate style of fishing that requires a different kind of patience.

While the video description notes that Lake Isabella holds a variety of species—including bass, catfish, and carp—Guy's focus remains on finding active fish willing to chase a fly.

The Importance of the Strip

Whether you are fishing the edges of the Kern River or the flooded timber of Lake Isabella, one of the most valuable lessons in this video is how a simple change in your retrieve can turn a follow into a strike.

Streamer fishing is highly visual, and you can often feel or see a fish chasing the fly. On the river, Guy experiences this firsthand, noting that a fish chased his flies twice, hitting them but refusing to fully commit. When this happens, the instinct is often to cast to a different spot. Instead, Guy changes his retrieve.

Later, on the lake, he applies the same logic. By switching to a more erratic strip, he immediately triggers a strike. The erratic movement mimics a wounded or fleeing baitfish, which is often exactly what it takes to convince a hesitant fish to eat. If you are getting follows but no hookups, don't change your fly right away—change your strip. Speed it up, slow it down, or make it more erratic until you find the rhythm the fish want.

Adapting to the Fishery

The main takeaway from this session is that the Kernville area is a dynamic, multi-water fishery. When the river flows are high, you can target the edges with streamers. When you want a change of pace, you can launch a float tube on Lake Isabella and fish the structure.

If you are gearing up for a trip to the area, stop by Kern River Fly Shop in Kernville. Whether you need to stock up on Woolly Buggers, check the latest river flows, or get advice on where to launch a float tube on the lake, local knowledge is invaluable. You can shop flies and gear online before you arrive, or book a guided Kern River fly fishing trip to learn these tactics from the experts.
