Late summer on the Kern River offers more than one kind of fly-fishing day. The Upper Kern is still a trout river, but it asks anglers to pay attention to timing, water temperature, and smaller food sources. Downstream, the Lower Kern begins to come into its own as a warm-water fishery, where bass move into slower seams, eddies, and softer water along the current.
