CEO, Guide, Instructor & Founder of the Guy Jeans School of Fly Fishing
Guy Jeans, CEO of Kern River Fly Shop and Kern River Fly Fishing, Inc., is a Certified Casting Instructor (CCI) with Fly Fishers International (FFI) and has dedicated more than 25 years to the fly-fishing industry. As a professional guide, instructor, lecturer, and educator, Guy spends more than 250 days a year on the water and in the field, sharing his knowledge throughout the Southern Sierra and beyond.
Guy's expertise spans the Southern Sierra, Sequoia National Forest, Inyo National Forest, Golden Trout Wilderness, Domeland Wilderness, and South Sierra Wilderness, where he guides and teaches anglers of all experience levels. His approach is built around practical instruction, reading water, understanding fish behavior, adapting to changing conditions, and developing the skills that help anglers become more confident and successful on the water.
He also specializes in Fly Fishing in the Surf, guiding and teaching classes along the California coastline. His surf instruction covers everything from casting techniques and strategies to choosing the proper equipment, tying knots and flies, and learning how to read the contour, tides, and structure of the surf.
In 2012, Guy received the prestigious Lee Wulff Award from Fly Fishers International for his contributions to fly-fishing education. He has fly fished extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Kiribati, pursuing everything from trout in alpine waters to saltwater game fish.
Guy is also an accomplished outdoor educator and media personality. He was the host of the critically acclaimed television series “Sierra Fly Fishing,” an instructional series that explored the diverse fly-fishing opportunities of the Sierra Nevada. Today, he continues to share fly-fishing instruction, destination adventures, and outdoor knowledge through his Fish the West video series and other educational content.
As a published outdoor writer, Guy has written articles about fly fishing for magazines and newspapers throughout the western United States. He is sponsored by Redington Fly Rods and has served as a contract fly designer for Solitude Fly Company. His fly patterns—including the Kern Emerger, Carpilicious, and other original designs—have been used and sold internationally.
Guy is also the host of the Guy Jeans Podcast, where he discusses “Everything Outdoors.” Outside of fly fishing, he is a vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter for the ska/reggae band Stoneflys.
Through the Guy Jeans School of Fly Fishing and Kern River Fly Shop, Guy shares decades of experience through guided trips, clinics, seminars, presentations, and professional guide training. His educational programs cover freshwater, warmwater, and saltwater fly fishing, casting, reading water, river safety, guide ethics, CPR and First Aid, customer service, and the business of professional guiding.
Guy's presentations and clinics include topics such as Secrets of the Kern, Top 20 Freshwater Fly Fishing Mistakes, Fly Fishing for River Bass, Fly Fishing the California Surf, Fly Casting, and Carp on the Fly. His presentations draw on the Southern Sierra and Kern River Valley, including the Upper Kern River, Kern Plateau, Little Kern River, South Fork Kern River, Lake Isabella, Golden Trout Wilderness, Domeland Wilderness, and other regional waters.

A Lifetime on the Water
From the high-elevation waters of the Southern Sierra to the California coast, Guy Jeans has built his career around one thing: helping people experience, understand, and enjoy the outdoors.
His decades of experience as a guide, instructor, fly designer, writer, broadcaster, consultant, and outfitter have given him an unusually broad perspective on fly fishing. Whether he's guiding a first-time angler on the Kern River, teaching advanced casting, introducing someone to fly fishing in the surf, training future professional guides, or consulting on a film production, Guy brings the same combination of knowledge, enthusiasm, and hands-on experience to every project.
That philosophy is at the heart of Kern River Fly Shop: real experience, local knowledge, quality instruction, and a genuine passion for the outdoors.
Media, Film & Technical Consulting
Guy Jeans possesses a wealth of knowledge, finely tuned skills, and more than 25 years of experience in the fly-fishing world. That experience has established him as a respected authority and representative of the sport and has led to opportunities well beyond traditional guiding and instruction.
Guy has been hired by companies both inside and outside the fly-fishing industry—including Sony, Plan B Entertainment for the motion picture “Vice” starring Christian Bale, Toyota, Saatchi & Saatchi, Jeep, Arctic Cat, Pelican Inc., Simms Fishing Products, Redington, Fishound.com, Kremer/Johnson Photography, Leave No Trace, Kern Valley Medical Center, and Emedia Group—to participate in major motion pictures and television commercials, fly-fishing shows, photo shoots, and other media productions.
He also provides technical fly-fishing consulting to film companies, media writers, photographers, outfitting manufacturers, and equipment designers.
Kern River Fly Fishing and Guy Jeans hold special permits to enter protected lands in several areas, including the Sequoia National Forest, Golden Trout Wilderness, and Domeland Wilderness. For productions looking for an authentic and visually striking outdoor setting, Kern River Fly Shop offers location scouting throughout these areas and along the picturesque Kern River.
